Increasing the efficiency of your household lighting is the most effective thing you can do to help reduce carbon emissions and LED lights are the most efficient lights money can buy. More efficient than fluorescent lights, LED lights emit a naturally balanced light unlike the neon glow often associated with florescent lights.

LED lights are also flicker-free and emit very little heat making for a safer lighting system working near flammable materials such as roof insulation; they don't use any mercury and are fully disposable. Saying this, you won't have to dispose of them until 30-60 years down the track.

This means that no further resources will go into making new lights for your house for a very long time: a great saving for you and your environment.
